Is an online MBA valid in India?

For jobs, government exams, promotions and PhD, and how to verify a university in two minutes.

Updated on 29 Oct 2026 · Reviewed by My MBA College editorial team · How we verify
Quick answer

Yes. An online MBA from a university entitled by the UGC to offer that programme in your admission session is treated as equivalent to a regular MBA under UGC regulations. Check the university on the UGC-DEB list before you pay.

What makes it valid

  • UGC entitlement for online programmes, for your specific session (January or July).
  • The programme itself must be on the entitled list, not just the university.
  • AICTE approval is not required for online MBAs from UGC-entitled universities.

How to check in two minutes

  1. Open deb.ugc.ac.in.
  2. Find the list of universities entitled to offer online programmes for the current session.
  3. Search the university and confirm the MBA is listed.
  4. Save a dated screenshot. Or use our UGC-DEB check walkthrough.

FAQ

Is an online MBA valid for government jobs?

Yes, when the university is UGC-entitled for that programme and session. Some recruitment notices add their own conditions, so read each notice.

Can I do a PhD after an online MBA?

A UGC-recognised online master's degree meets the master's requirement for PhD admission; each university sets its own entrance and eligibility rules.

Does the degree say "online"?

Universities issue the degree under UGC rules; many do not mark it as online. Ask the university to confirm for your batch.
